Meditation experts try virtual reality mindfulness

A pilot study evaluation of the feasibility and acceptability of virtual reality to facilitate mindfulness practice in people attending a mindfulness conference.

Many people who could benefit from mindfulness practice, do not carry it out probably because of the surrounding distractions. As opposed to the conventional mindfulness practice, Virtual Reality or VR technology facilitates meditation and mindfulness by capturing the user’s attention and giving the illusion of self-presence in a computer generated 3D setting. Cutting off the users from the real world and its distractions, the VR technology lets them visit interesting spots to practice meditation or mindfulness. The study aims to explore the outcome of the traditional Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) mindfulness skills training where the participants were unable to concentrate versus VR based DBT mindfulness skills training.
